Deities of Ancient Egypt: Gods, Goddesses & Forms of Worship
Instructor: Cindy Rose
October 2, 2007, Tuesday, 7:05 – 8:45 pm
It is a universal truth that the myths of cultures are attempts to explain the unexplainable. A cultural mythos often sets standards for behavior and values, and emphasizes places and elements important to its people. The myths of ancient Egypt are especially fascinating: gods and goddesses took on human and animal form. They lived, loved, died, ate, drank, and had human emotions. The mysteries of the Nile River and the universe were explained through the presence of the very powerful sacred figures. There was no organized hierarchical structure of the gods and the dominance of particular deities was dependant upon the beliefs of the reigning pharaoh and the “nome” (region) of Egypt. Learn about significant goddesses including Isis, Bastet, Hathor, Ma’at, Tefnut and Selkhet; gods including Atum, Anubis, Horus, Ra and Osiris.
Enjoy an introduction to the primary deities of ancient Egypt through lecture, slide presentation, and book illustrations. An extensive handout will provide participants with academic information as well as suggestions for incorporating ancient traditions into your modern rituals. Tips included: creating an altar, incorporating visual imagery in your home, recipes for a perfume using Egyptian oils, and recipes to make an Egyptian feast worthy of the gods. Light refreshments will be shared.
